INMO, Siptu and PNA to stage Dail protest 11.30am, Tuesday September 27
Press Release

INMO/SIPTU AND PNA TO STAGE DÁIL PROTEST AT 11.30 A.M. TOMORROW, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

-    A delegation from the three unions will meet Minister Harris at 1.00 in Leinster House following the protest

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, together with SIPTU and the PNA, will stage a protest at 11.30am tomorrow, Tuesday September 27, outside the Dáil. The protest is in support of the restoration of incremental credit for nurses and midwives who graduated between 2011 and 2015. Following the protest, a delegation from the three unions, including a number of graduates, will meet with the Minister for Health, Simon Harris in Leinster House at 1.00p.m.

At the end of 2015, the INMO, together with two other unions, concluded an agreement with the HSE and the Department of Health that restored monetary recognition for the 36 week Nursing/Midwifery Internship from 2011 onwards.  However, the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform (DEPER) subsequently amended part of the agreement, and only sanctioned recognition for 2016 graduates onwards.

This means that 2011-2015 nursing and midwifery graduates are left in a position where they will be earning less than their colleagues pre 2011 who were automatically awarded the credit.  This is a loss of over €1,400  for 2011-2013 graduates and over €1,000 for 2014-2015 graduates.

At a time when there is a critical shortage of nurses and midwives the unions are demanding the restoration of this incremental credit along with the introduction of dynamic incentivised recruitment/retention initiatives in order to recruit and retain new graduates to address the severe crisis in staffing across the health service.
