Due to on-going staff shortages, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) undertook a survey of all nursing and midwifery internship students to examine where the group from 2017 would seek employment upon qualification. This survey aimed to gather statistics and trends from the group regarding their gender, age, consideration of emigration, current employment prospects and incentives that would encourage them to remain with the Irish public health sector.
Less than 800 of the 5,000 nursing and midwifery graduates who qualified during the period 2011-2015 remain in the Irish public health sector. This survey shows statistics and trends that support and emphasise the clear need for urgent measures to keep our highly trained and qualified nurses and midwives in Ireland.
