INMO awards prizes to outstanding members at 102nd Conference
press release 07.05.21

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has today (Friday) awarded its annual prizes to members who have made outstanding contributions.

The prizes were announced at the INMO’s 102nd annual delegate’s conference, the second of its conferences to be held online since the start of the pandemic. The theme of this year’s conference is “Courage to Care”, in recognition of the tremendous courage of nurses and midwives in all areas of the health service throughout the pandemic.

This year’s winners:

  • The CJ Coleman research award to nurse Niamh Doherty, a staff nurse at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital for her research project, looking at using a smartphone finger pad to monitor irregular heart rate among older people.
  • The INMO’s annual Preceptor of the Year award for outstanding mentorship in nursing and midwifery was won by staff nurse Rochelle Santos from Dublin’s Mater Hospital, nominated by Bridget Butler.
  • The Gobnait O’Connell award for exceptional contributions to the nurses and midwives’ union was shared by joint winners staff nurse in Intellectual Disability, Ailish Byrne, and Public Health Nurse Anita Roddy.

INMO President and Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Beaumont Hospital, Karen McGowan said

“It is remarkable to see nurses and midwives continue to advance their professions, improve patient care, and strengthen their professional union throughout this difficult period. It’s a great testament to the passion and dedication among nurses and midwives that they continue to produce such a high standard of research and work, despite incredible challenges”.

“It’s also extremely heartening to see our members again participate online in this conference. This is such an important time for this organization, and I’m so proud to see my colleagues bring forward and debate the issues that will affect their professions and the health service in the coming year and in years to come.

“Our conference is always an important milestone for the organization, and I hope this time next year will see many of us gathered in one place to move our union forward and recognize the contributions of our incredible colleagues.”
