As part of our ongoing communication, with members, I wish to draw your attention to the following:
1. ED Members Accept Revised WRC Proposals regarding Overcrowding
Our members, in the 26 Emergency Departments across the country, have voted, by a margin of 71% in favour to 29% against, to accept the revised proposals, brought forward, by the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC), some three weeks ago.
The acceptance of these proposals, following rejection of earlier measures, confirm our members’ absolute commitment to patient care and to the need for a safe working environment which will allow them to practice safely.
The proposals, which now form a formal agreement between the HSE/INMO, now fall to be implemented, in full and on an ongoing basis, involve a number of measures including:
This Taskforce follows on from the Taskforce on Nurse Staffing, on medical/surgical wards, which published its interim report, earlier this week, and now moves to a pilot stage in three hospitals across the country;
The agreement also provides for the Workplace Relations Commission to convene the parties, after one month, to review the implementation of the agreement. The INMO will convene a national meeting, of our ED representatives from departments across the country, one week ahead of this meeting with the WRC, to ensure full clarity on how the agreement is being implemented at hospital/group level.
2. Taskforce on Nurse Staffing - Medical/Surgical Wards
As mentioned previously this Taskforce, which was established by the Minister as a direct result of the INMO’s Safe Staffing Campaign, issued its interim report earlier this week.
The first meeting of the Implementation Group, with regard to the pilot sites, also took place this week and the INMO is represented, on that group, by our President, Claire Mahon.
It is expected that the pilot sites, there will be six wards in three hospitals, will be chosen, within the next week/10 days, with an immediate move to commence the pilots thereafter.
The INMO remains determined to ensure that the recommendations, of this Taskforce, when tested, will prove to form a basis for stable, secure and consistent staffing, across the country’s 246 medical/surgical wards, over the next two/three years. They will bring us much closer to the approach regarding staffing, which exists in education i.e. pupil teacher ratio, and, if properly implemented, will ensure manageable workloads, for nursing staff, and best possible outcomes for patients.
Members will be kept fully appraised, on an ongoing basis, of progress, within the pilot sites, with the pilots themselves expected to run for approximately six months.
3. Executive Council Elections
All members are reminded that the closing date, for nominations to contest seats on the Executive Council election, is 5.00 p.m. on next Wednesday, 10th February 2016.
Members wishing to contest the election must ensure that their nominations, together with biographical data and photograph, are submitted, on the appropriate forms available from your local branch/section officers. They are also available from INMO head office but they must be completed, and submitted, by next Wednesday, 10th February 2016, at 5.00 p.m.
