Strike Action Deferred To Allow Members Consider Proposals
As you will undoubtedly be aware the Executive Council of the INMO has decided, last evening (Monday, 14th December 2015), after lengthy deliberation to defer the strike action, which had been scheduled for seven Emergency Departments today. This is to allow our Emergency Department members consider proposals which have emerged from the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC).
It should be noted that the planned strike action, scheduled for Tuesday, 12th and Tuesday, 26th January 2016, remain in place, at this time, and the action has only been deferred to allow members consider and ballot on the proposals.
In regard to the proposals, which emerged from consideration of the four claims we had lodged on the employers following your recent ballot, they can be broadly described as follows:
The proposals involve a tightening, and earlier activation of, the national Escalation Policy for the purpose of minimising ED overcrowding, lengthy waits on trolleys and avoiding extra beds/trolleys on inpatient wards.
2. Recruitment and Retention
Specific measures to assist with recruitment and retention, of nursing staff, to Emergency Departments. These include:
3. Health and Safety
The proposals involve the designation of all Emergency Departments as distinct workplaces under the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.
We are currently preparing, as is our practice, a comprehensive briefing/information document, together with Questions and Answers, which will be circulated to all members for consideration when local information meetings take place. Members will then be asked to ballot on the proposals. This ballot must be completed (recognising we have the Christmas/New Year period) before 5th January 2016 as, if the proposals are rejected, we must give employers seven days notice of the strike action on 12th January 2016.
In that regard I must ask you to watch out for the dates and times of these local meetings, and balloting opportunities, which will be notified to you in the coming days.
May I close this initial note by thanking every member, in all Emergency Departments, for their ongoing involvement, in this INMO campaign, as we now move to the next step of considering these proposals in the coming days.
With kind regards.
