PDC -Continuing Professional Development for Nurses and Midwives

Welcome to the September issue of the INMO Professional Development Centre eight page pull out of professional development opportunities. The INMO believes that every nurse and midwife should have the opportunity to avail of continuing professional development, maintain and enhance their competence and develop their professional career. Continuing professional development and lifelong learning have become cornerstones of nursing and midwifery professional practice.

Part 11 of The Nurses and Midwives Act, 2011 places responsibilities on registrants, the Board and employers in relation to the maintenance of professional competence. Continuing professional development will form part of the professional competence schemes that the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) is required to develop. In a recent meeting with the NMBI it was confirmed that before a decision on the professional competence scheme or schemes is made, there will be engagement and consultation with specific stakeholders and stakeholder groups.

There is a difference between competence and continuing professional development. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) defines competence as the ability of the registered nurse or midwife to practise safely and effectively, fulfilling his/her professional responsibility within his/her scope of practice (An Bord Altranais 2005 and 2007). Continuing or continued competence is usually demonstrated against a competency standard or statement. Continuing professional development (CPD) refers to any activity that contributes to professional development as a nurse or midwife. In addition to formal education programmes and CPD activities, there are many other activities that can be included under the heading continuing professional development, including but not limited to: audit of practice or workload; conference, and seminar attendance; developing policies and guidelines; membership of clinical groups (eg. INMO Sections); mentoring or preceptorship; policy development; peer review; presenting papers and posters; reflective writing activities (such as critical incident analyses); risk assessment activities; training on new equipment; or writing for in-house, regional, national or international publications, etc. (NCNM 2009). Therefore, it is important to keep a record of all of your activities that contribute to demonstrating your competence as required.

The new INMO Professional website inmoprofessional.ie, provides a one-stop-shop to customised, quality education programmes and research services that are tailored to meet your educational requirements. In addition to our flexible, affordable continuing education programmes you can access a full range of library services through the site. INMO Professional Development Centre – Library Services-Study smart – Tips for starting your first assignment

Assistant librarian Edel Reynolds outlines some tips and tools for working smarter when preparing your first assignment

Many of you will have recently been involved in formal study while some of you may be returning to education. Either way, the following tips may be useful for you to keep in mind when working on your first assignment.

Listen carefully to what your lecturers and tutors say when they are outlining an assignment. Ask questions even if you feel that you should already know the answer. It is likely that many of your classmates will have the same question in mind. It is always better to have any queries clarified as soon as possible rather than a couple of days before the assignment is due.

Read the question and guidelines carefully
Many students rush in and fail to understand what the question is really asking of them, before later realising that they are on the wrong track. What is the question asking you to do? There is a difference between being asked to outline, discuss, argue, compare, contrast, explain, justify or summarise, so ensure that you distinguish between these commands before you start writing. It is useful to re-read the question as you work through your assignment, this can help you to stay on target.

Time
As you know, there will often be more than one assignment due in around the same time. Try to divide your time evenly so that you don’t spend too long on one assignment and then not have enough time for another assignment. Keep in mind the proportion of marks that are allocated to each assignment, this will help you to plan the time available to you wisely.

Sourcing information
If your lecturer has mentioned specific readings for the assignment, they are a good starting point. As well as the reading lists provided by your lecturer, you may be required to source some further information on your topic. The INMO Library provides online access to over 400 nursing journals. As an INMO member, you can access these free of charge. To access, visit www.inmoprofessional.ie/Library and then click on Nurse2Nurse. If you then log on with your username and password and click on ‘N2N journals’, you will see links to our journals. To access Nurse2Nurse, you must register online with your INMO membership number and your name, as they appear on your membership card.

Another useful way to find suitable information is through databases such as Cinahl, Nursing@Ovid and Maternity and Infant Care. These databases allow you to search for articles on any topic by using keywords and subject headings. You have access to these databases through www.nurse2nurse.ie. From the very start, try to keep a record of all of the books, articles and reports that you use in your assignment, you will need this in order to compile your list of references.

Reliable resources:
Remember to avoid using unreliable sources such as magazines, and websites such as Wikipedia. Try to ensure that the sources that you use are reliable and up to date. Some good sources include:

As well as marks for content, there may be marks granted for sticking to the guidelines – Have you used the right referencing system? Have you adhered to the word count?

Referencing
Students have to be very careful when writing assignments. Although you are encouraged to give your own examples and opinions, whenever you are discussing ideas that have been written about by another author, you must indicate so. You will have to indicate the sources of your information within the body of your assignment and also by including all of the sources used in a list of references at the end of your assignment. Most colleges in Ireland use the Harvard referencing system, however there are other systems such as the APA system, Chicago system and Vancouver system. Check with your lecturer to make sure that you are using the correct referencing system.

How we can help
If you need any help with registering with Nurse2Nurse, or sourcing journal articles, guidelines or reports, we can help. We also provide one-to-one training on using databases such as Cinahl and Nursing@Ovid. If you would like to avail of this service, contact us to arrange a suitable time. If you would like library staff to carry out a literature search on your chosen topic, we can do so and email/post you a list of suitable references (€6 fee). If you need further information or assistance from the Professional Development Centre Library, please call 01 664 0614 or Email: library@inmo.ie. Opening hours: Monday to Thursday: 8.30am- 5.00pm, Friday: 8.30am-4.30pm.
