Welcome to the October issue of the INMO Professional Development Centre eight-page pull out of professional development opportunities. The INMO Professional Development Centre is a dedicated education and professional development hub for nurses and midwives, offering access to professional networks, educational programmes, conferences, library services and focused research for nurses and midwives.
Recently, 22 new education programmes have been developed in response to nurses and midwives requirements. There are now 99 Category 1 education programmes/conferences approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) all with dedicated Continuing Education Units (CEUs) awarded to each event. Included in this issue are a range of education programmes being delivered in the INMO Limerick Office, covering topics such as; delegation and clinical supervision, end of life thematic inspections, food and nutrition thematic inspections and practical skills in the management of people with diabetes. While in the INMO Cork Office the up and coming education programmes include; medication management in diabetes, wound care management, interview skills, assessment and care planning in residential care settings for older people and non-violent crisis intervention.
In addition to the education programmes delivered in our facilities (Cork, Dublin and Limerick), we also provide an on-site service across the country in any service. On-site courses allow for more cost-effective education of nurses and midwives without the disruption of travel. Both our standard suite of education programmes and tailor-made programmes can be delivered on-site for a standard fee with a minimum number of participants. All requirements for on-site programmes will be discussed in advance to ensure that the choice of programme is customised to meet specific needs. Tailor-made programmes do require additional time in order to customise and apply for approval by NMBI.
Of particular note this month is the All Ireland Midwifery Conference which is organised by the Midwives Section of the INMO. This year the midwives conference is on October 16, 2014, in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry, Dublin. This is the 20th anniversary of the partnership between the INMO and the Royal College of Midwives Northern Ireland. Congratulations to the Midwives Section for their professionalism, relentless dedication and commitment to delivering this national event over two decades.

Assessment and Management of the Patient with Sepsis
This study day is designed to provide an innovative academic opportunity to enable registered nurses/midwives to increase their knowledge, experience and clinical skills to meet the complex and varied needs of patients with sepsis. Sepsis can occur at any age and in any clinical situation. It is considered a medical emergency and continues to have a high mortality rate despite advances in treatment. This course assists nurses/midwives with the skills and knowledge to take the lead in the assessment and management of sepsis. Early identification of sepsis and the implementation of appropriate interventions in a timely manner can improve patient outcomes.

Art and Science of Antenatal Education
This two-day workshop will prepare midwives to design an effective antenatal education programme for expectant mothers and fathers. The philosophy of this course is based on the principles of adult learning and on the belief that antenatal education is a health promotion activity. This course will prepare midwives to encourage expectant parents to see themselves as competent and able to make informed choices for themselves and for their baby.

Academic Writing and Research Appraisal Simplified
This one-day course is aimed at nurses and midwives who are undertaking third-level academic programmes. This course will assist participants in completing their written assignments. Introduction to Clinical Audit
This one-day course is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills to implement Clinical Audit in their practice and to be able to deliver evidence of improved performance for safer and better care for patients. Pressure Ulcer Prevention and Management
This course provides an informal learning environment for nurses/midwives to broaden their knowledge and understanding of pressure ulcer wound assessment and management. Practical Skills in the Management of People with Diabetes
This course aims to provide nurses/midwives with understanding, knowledge and confidence when delivering care to individuals with diabetes. This course offers a practical approach to diabetes, whether based in the hospital or community setting. Many theoretical aspects of diabetes are covered such as: the different types of diabetes, national and international guidelines, how to offer lifestyle advice to patients, treatment options, and understanding blood results, as well as dealing with complications in diabetes.

End of Life Thematic Inspections
The aim of this workshop is to outline the legal and professional requirements for end of life care in designated centres and to identify how to apply this to practice, so as to provide effective, evidence-based care to residents. Food and Nutrition Thematic Inspections
This course is aimed at nurses working in residential care settings for older people. Healthcare Provider CPR and AED
This Healthcare Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) course provides the information, rationale and practical skills training for the 2010 CPR and ECC guidelines. Nurses and midwives are required to adhere to the two-year certification period for both basic and advanced life support, as recommended by International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation as the best practice standard. Strategies for Managing Conflict
Conflict in the workplace can be incredibly destructive to good teamwork. Managed in the wrong way, real and legitimate differences between people can quickly spiral out of control. Conflict is not necessarily destructive; managing conflict effectively may result in positive outcomes such as new ideas and initiatives and the development of positive communication, active listening and problem solving skills. Developing and maintaining positive relationships and the ability to deal with difficult people and situations is essential within today’s diverse workforce. Therefore it is important that senior healthcare professionals have the knowledge, skills and confidence to be able to intervene at an early stage to resolve conflict situations before they escalate. Nursing the Cardiac Patient
This study day provides a forum to update nurses on national and international trends in the holistic management of patients with cardiac disease. Epilepsy

Medication Management in Diabetes
This course provides nurses/midwives with knowledge on how to use best clinical practice and reduce the amount of medication errors in relation to insulin use. Insulin is a high alert medicine and errors in its use can result in serious patient safety incidents. Nurses/midwives need to have knowledge about the actions and effects of medications as well as pharmacologic principles in order to safely and accurately administer medication. INMO SAFE PRACTICE WORKSHOPS
The Professional Development Centre is providing a nationwide series of workshops in venues across the country. This programme provides safe practice tools to protect the nurse and midwife and patient within current healthcare settings.
This is an awareness session to ensure all staff have an understanding of the process involved regarding patient alerts, clinical incidents and thorough assessment, while remaining focused on patient and individual staff.
The programme addresses patient safety and staff safety and provides five key tools on areas of documentation, clinical incident reporting, safety statements, best practice guidelines regarding assessment, and communication practices in a complex multifaceted healthcare arena.
‘Tools for Safe Practice’ is Category 1 approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and awarded with 4 CEUs.

INMO Professional Development Centre – Library Services - Getting the most from a literature review
There are a few simple steps to follow in order to best structure a literature review, writes assistant librarian Niamh Adams
As part of your undergraduate college course, you will be required to undertake a literature review. This can be a daunting task for many students as they try to find a suitable topic. In this article we take a closer look at how to manage such an assignment.
What is a literature review?
A literature review is the comprehensive study and interpretation of literature that relates to a particular topic. When you undertake a literature review, you identify a research question and then seek to answer this by searching for and analysing relevant literature.1
What is the purpose of a literature review?
- To identify the most up to date knowledge on the topic
- To gain a scholarly depth of knowledge on the topic
- To gain further understanding of a subject, eg. To develop nursing policy or procedure
- For personal interest.
What are the steps in undertaking a literature review?
- Choose a topic
- Formulate a research question on the topic
- Gather, read and critique the literature found
- Write the review
- References.
Deciding on a topic
One of the most challenging parts of a literature review is deciding on a topic. It is advisable to start with a broad subject area and search through the available literature. It is then easier to narrow down your topic to a particular area.
Formulate a research question
Once you have your subject area, you must then refine it down to a specific question that will be investigated. Look out for particular angles or areas of interest . In order to do this, you may have to do further research in the subject area and even do some reading around the area or speak to specialists, to help identify a question. Think about limiting to specific age groups or geographical areas, interventions, or nursing knowledge/attitudes on the topic. It is important to have sufficient literature to actually undertake the assignment but topics that are too broad will result in a review that is too long and too superficial and potentially will result in you finding it difficult to adhere to the word limit.
Gather, read and critique literature
It is crucial not to spend too much time on searching and reading. As you are reading, start documenting your thoughts. You need to read, interpret and structure the data that you have gathered.
Literature searching
Searching the literature is a time consuming task. Do not expect to locate all information in one search setting.

Write the review
The review must consist of:
Introduction
Here the topic should be specified, overall trends and conflicts in the literature should be outlined and gaps in previous research identified. It is also very important at this point to justify your reasons for writing the review.
Body
This will be the bulk of the review and here you will discuss each piece of literature in turn. Research studies should be presented in a logical order, eg. chronological, thematically, etc. Previous studies should be summarised and critically evaluated.
Conclusion
A discussion of which studies have made the greatest contribution to the subject. Evaluate the current general state of research in this area and finally discuss the research opportunities in this area.
References
As mentioned in the last article the Harvard Referencing System is the most common used in Ireland. You should refer to your college handbook however. When beginning your literature search, keep a detailed list of the articles you are using.
Always ensure if photocopying articles or chapters from books, that you have all the reference details so get the volume and issue number as well as the page numbers for the article. Also be mindful that incorrect or inaccurate referencing can lead to a loss of marks.
