Library - Care of the older person

Edel Reynolds from the INMO library team focuses on literature of interest to nurses working in the care of the older person setting

Ireland’s population is growing, with the demographic aged 65 and over rising steadily. There has been an increase of 14.4% in this age group in the period between 2006 and 2012, while at the same time the percentage of Irish people aged 85 years or older has increased by 21.6%.1 In this context, many nurses could find themselves caring for older people at some point during their career.

Working in the care of the older person setting can bring the need for up-to-date knowledge on a wide variety of issues specific to this area. In this article we outline some resources that may be useful for nurses working in this area.

The INMO holds its Care of the Older Person Conference on June 10. There will be many speakers on the day covering various topics such as; advanced care directives, the importance of activities, depression, diabetes, HIQA thematic inspections, and person-centred care. To book a place you can contact the organisers at Tel: 01 6640648.

Some literature related to the topics listed above will be explored within this article. These will be made available on www.nurse2nurse.ie
