Speaking following a meeting with the CEO of the Health Service Executive, the INMO, Fórsa, Connect, Unite, and the MLSA have expressed disappointment with the HSE’s cavalier attitude to a dispute that is due to begin in the form of a work-to-rule by over 80,000 workers in the public health service March 31st 2025.

Fórsa and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation have served notice of industrial action to the HSE today (Monday 10th March), marking an escalation in the dispute over the effect of the HSE’s ‘Pay and Numbers Strategy’ which imposed a fixed employment ceiling across all health services.

The union has stated that this has been the worst February for hospital overcrowding on record, the second month in a row with record overcrowding.

The INMO has today (Wednesday) released the results of their first ‘Behind the Trolley Numbers’ survey completed by nurses in the country’s acute hospitals on their experiences of treating patients on trolleys or in hospital corridors.  

Over 793 patients are bring treated on trolleys, chairs and in other inappropriate bed spaces today according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation. 

The INMO has stated that over 13,972 people have been treated in hospitals without a bed this month, making it the highest month ever recorded for trolley figures.
