An emergency motion at the ADC called on the Irish government to follow the lead of other countries and to make every effort, including providing practical assistance to the Nigerian government, to secure the return of the 200 kidnapped schoolgirls from the town of Chibok.
Delegates expressed their disgust at the horrific events and affirmed the INMO’s solidarity with the young women and their families. “This incident is particularly shocking when it is remembered that the only reason they were kidnapped was because they were girls trying to obtain an education to give them a future,” the motion said.
Following the unanimous adoption of the motion, Liam Doran, INMO general secretary, wrote to Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore urging the government to take every step to assist in finding the girls and returning them safely to their families.
