Welcome to the November issue of the INMO Professional Development Centre eight-page pull out of professional development opportunities. The INMO Professional Development Centre is a dedicated education and professional development hub for nurses and midwives, offering access to professional networks, educational programmes, conferences, library services and focused research for nurses and midwives.
The Nurses and Midwives Act, 2011, Part 11 places responsibilities on registrants, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and employers in relation to the maintenance of professional competence. Continuing professional development will form part of the professional competence schemes that the NMBI are required to develop. Recently published and of particular importance to the maintenance of professional competence is the new NMBI Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives (the Code) which comes into effect December 10, 2014. This document replaces the Code of Professional Conduct for Each Nurse and Midwife (2000). The Code sets the principles of what is expected from a nurse and midwife and their professional responsibilities in caring for patients in a safe, ethical and effective way. It also defines what it means to be a regulated professional. There are a number of aims of the Code including to “support and guide nurses and midwives in their ethical and clinical decision making, their on-going reflection and professional self development (the Code, p.8). Under Principle 3: Quality of Practice the Code details the standards to be maintained and states that “You must keep your knowledge and skills up-to-date by taking part in relevant continuing professional development. You must be prepared to demonstrate your competence if required” (the Code, p.21). Under the Nurses and Midwives Act 2011, Part 7 Section 55 (1) failure to comply with this code may bring your fitness to practise into question and endanger your registration. Further information on the Code is accessible at: www.nursingboard.ie.
Continuing professional development (CPD) refers to any activity that contributes to professional development as a nurse or midwife. In addition to formal education programmes and CPD activities, there are many other activities that can be included under the heading continuing professional development, for example: audit of practice or workload; course, conference, workshop and seminar attendance; developing policies, protocols and guidelines, in-service training, involvement in committees, membership of clinical groups (eg. INMO Sections), mentoring, coaching or preceptorship; policy development or service planning; peer review; presenting papers and posters; professional related reading; project work, reflective writing activities (such as critical incident analyses), risk assessment and management activities, research studies, training on new equipment; work-based learning and writing for in-house, regional, national or international publications, etc. (NCNM 2009). Therefore, it is important to keep record of all your activities that contribute to demonstrating your competence as required.
The new INMO Professional website: inmoprofessional.ie, provides a one-stop-shop to customised, quality education programmes and research services that are tailored to meet your educational requirements. INMO Professional Development Centre – Library Services - Literature searching tips on e-resources
A little forward planning goes a long way towards getting the most out of a literature search using e-resources, write assistant librarians Edel Reynolds and Niamh Adams
Part of searching for literature, whether it is for a literature review or a short assignment, will involve utilising one or all of the many e-resources available. This article provides a brief introduction to e-resources available from the INMO Professional Development Library and includes some practical tips to use when searching.
To access the e-resources, log on to www.nurse2nurse.ie with your username and password, then select the menu option 'Search Databases'. You will then be brought to a list of available e-resources.
Planning your search
It can be useful to understand what types of e-resources are available and the information they contain. Table 1 provides a quick explanation of the main e-resources available via Nurse2Nurse. Searching can be time consuming, particularly for literature reviews so always allow plenty of time to ensure a comprehensive search is completed.
Table 1: Nurse2Nurse e-resources and features | ||
E-Resource | Coverage | Main Features/Uses |
Cinahl Plus with fulltext (EBSCO) | American with many UK and Irish Journals |
|
Maternity and Infant Care (OVID) | UK and International |
|
Medline/ PubMed (OVID) | American |
|
Cochrane Library | International |
|
Nursing@ Ovid (OVID) | American |
|
Many of the e-resources, including EBSCO and OVID allow you to set up personal accounts. This allows the user to save searches, keep articles in folders and set up alerts for when new articles on a particular topic are published. This can be very useful when compiling a list of references.
The ‘search history’ function can be a useful tool as it lists all of the terms you have searched for in one search setting. Sometimes you are required to submit this as part of your assignment.
Creating a search strategy
Before commencing a search it is important to do some brainstorming around the topic and to develop a search strategy. This involves thinking of all possible keywords and any synonyms that may be used. For example, antenatal/prenatal or postnatal/postpartum. Think about alternative spellings for the same word for example, labour/labor or behaviour/behavior.
Identify what kind of articles are required. This involves using the many and varied refining search features provided. For example, the articles may be required to be limited to a certain timeframe, geographical area, etc. Thinking in these terms will help you to narrow down your search.
The next step is then to formulate a research question in order to focus your search.
Subject heading searching
Each e-resource uses a unique set of subject terms to index articles by their topics and themes. When using Cinahl, if a keyword is typed into the search box and ‘Suggest subject terms’ is ticked a list of appropriate subject headings will be displayed. This will enable the search to be more accurate. The user can then select the most appropriate subject heading for the search.
The library has developed a guide for using Cinahl which illustrates the searching process in more detail. Contact us if you would like one of these emailed to you.
It can take a while to become familiar with the way in which the different e-resources work and the subject headings used but it is definitely a worthwhile exercise. The skills of literature searching are important as a student but will also be utilised throughout your career as a nurse or midwife.
This article only touches on some of the elements involved in searching the literature. For further assistance on anything mentioned in this article, please contact the library.
