The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has welcomed the decision by the Minister for Health to re-instate the Special Scheme of Paid Leave for certain eligible public health sector employees suffering from Long COVID for the next twelve months.
INMO Director of Industrial Relations, Albert Murphy said:
The INMO welcomes the decision to extend the special scheme of paid leave for healthcare workers with Long COVID. The majority of these healthcare workers are nurses and midwives who contracted COVID at work when most others were told to stay at home during the height of the virus. The extension of this scheme will give some comfort to our members with Long COVID, a predominantly female cohort, who are still grappling with a wide range of symptoms at great personal cost. The Department of Health cannot let this very emotional issue drag on over the next twelve months, they must now meaningfully engage with unions about the establishment of a scheme for Long COVID for these workers.
